The Evolution of LA Production Shoot Days Amid Industry Shifts
The world of film and TV production in Los Angeles has seen some major shifts from 2016 to now. If you’re keeping track of shoot days, you’ve probably noticed the ups and downs from keeping up with the industry.
From the chaos of the COVID-19 pandemic, to the recent SAG-AFTRA strikes and then the flurry of mergers and acquisitions, there’s been a lot to navigate over the past few years.
We've spent the time to break down these factors and combined them with data gathered from FilmLa and others to help paint a clearer picture for our viewers.
Editor's Note: After going a wider search for production days outside of delays, most of the data is around the Los Angeles Area. Therefore this article only reflects the LA industry, independent from other major hubs.
Pre-Pandemic Trends (2016-2019)
Between 2016 and 2019, Los Angeles experienced a steady flow of production activities, with annual shoot days consistently remaining strong and consistently ranging from 36,000 and 39,000. Feature films, television, commercials, and other forms of media maintained a robust presence. The total television shoot days, in particular, saw significant activity, peaking at 16,463 in 2016 – demonstrating the thriving nature of serialized content within this era.
Impact of the Pandemic (2020-2021)
However, the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 brought about a notable shift in production schedules. Lockdowns and health protocols led to a substantial reduction in annual shoot days, with total production activity nearly halving from 36,540 in 2019 to 18,933 in 2020. However, by 2021, there were signs of recovery, with total shoot days rebounding to 37,709, indicating a swift industry adaptation to the new safety measures.
SAG-AFTRA Strikes and Industry Response (2023)
The 2023 SAG-AFTRA strikes, spanning from July 14 to November 9, temporarily slowed production in Los Angeles. Despite the challenges posed by the strikes, the industry’s response was measured, with an eventual return to production activities as agreements were reached. While the strikes resulted in a temporary dip in shoot days – particularly in feature films and television – there is optimism that the industry will continue to recover and move forward.
From 2022 to 2023 there was a 32.4% decrease in the number of production days.
After the strike, in 2024 there has been a 70.07% decrease in production days compared to 2023.
Side Story: Mergers and Acquisitions Shaping the Industry (2016-Present)
At the same time, the industry has witnessed a significant wave of mergers and acquisitions that have reshaped the corporate landscape. Major deals, such as Disney’s acquisition of 21st Century Fox in 2019 and Warner Bros.' merger with Discovery Inc. in 2022, have concentrated power among a few media giants. These mergers have influenced production priorities, often leading to shifts in the types of projects being greenlit and the allocation of resources for shoots in Los Angeles.
The consolidation trend has had a mixed impact on LA’s production days. On the one hand, it has brought more significant financial backing and resources to specific projects, potentially boosting shoot days for high-profile films and series. On the other hand, it has also led to a focus on established franchises and proven content, which might reduce the number of experimental or independent projects filmed in the city.
* Editor's note: 2020-2021 was the pandemic and 2023 included the 2023 strike

Despite facing significant challenges, from global pandemics to labor disputes and corporate consolidations, Los Angeles continues to be a central hub for production.
The industry’s ability to navigate these obstacles and adapt to new realities speaks volumes about its strength and perseverance.
